DON’T MISS OUT ON BENEFITS AND CREDITS: WHY FILING YOUR TAXES MATTERS

Filing your taxes every year does more than report your income—it unlocks the benefits and credits that help with everyday costs, including the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB).
If you don’t file, you could be leaving money on the table.
Why Filing on Time Matters
Your benefits and credits for the year are calculated after the CRA assesses your tax return. Every July, your payments reset based on the return you filed for the previous year.
When you file on time:
– our July payments arrive on schedule
– You avoid delays
– You stay up to date on your eligibility and payment amounts
If you file late, you’ll still receive your benefits—but only after the CRA finishes assessing your return.
Catching up on older returns? You can still receive retroactive payments** once those returns are filed and assessed.
Keep Your Personal Information Up to Date
Life changes—like moving, getting married, or changing your phone number—can affect your benefit and credit amounts.
Update your information anytime through the CRA’s online services.
Watch for Your Notice of Determination
The CRA issues an electronic Notice of Determination for each benefit and credit you qualify for. You can view these documents by signing in to your CRA account.
Your notice will show:
– The benefits and credits you’re eligible for
– The amounts you’ll receive from July 2026 to June 2027
Lost access to your CRA account? You can recover your credentials online.
Benefit and Credit Payments Coming This Summer
June 5, 2026: One-Time Top-Up Payment
– A one-time GST/HST credit top-up, part of the new CGEB, will be issued to eligible individuals.
– If you received the January 2026 GST/HST credit, you’ll automatically receive this top-up.
– It may appear as a GST/HST credit on your notice or bank statement because it’s being issued before the CGEB officially begins.
Starting July 2026
– The first quarterly CGEB payment (formerly the GST/HST credit) will be issued on July 3, 2026.
– Eligible individuals will begin receiving CGEB payments, which may include amounts from related provincial or territorial programs.
– You must file your 2025 tax return and meet eligibility requirements to receive the CGEB.
– If you file late, your first payment will be issued after your return is assessed.
Catching up on past returns? Retroactive CGEB payments will be issued if you qualify.
