WASHINGTON — This National Volunteer Week, the Internal Revenue Service proudly celebrates the tens of thousands of extraordinary VITA and TCE volunteers whose service strengthens communities and uplifts the nation. These individuals don’t just give their time—they give their heart, their expertise, and their unwavering belief that every taxpayer deserves clarity, dignity, and support.
For more than 50 years, VITA and TCE volunteers have stood shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the IRS, delivering free, accurate, and empowering tax assistance to low‑ and moderate‑income individuals across America. Their work does more than prepare returns—it opens doors, unlocks credits, and equips taxpayers with knowledge that fuels financial confidence.
“This filing season, thousands of VITA and TCE volunteers rose to meet the needs of taxpayers who rely on them most,” said IRS CEO Frank J. Bisignano. “They supported military families, reached deep into rural communities, guided senior citizens, and uplifted countless others. Their dedication strengthens the IRS mission and proves that service—real, human service—creates lasting impact every single day of the year.”
In 2026 alone, VITA and TCE volunteers powered through more than 2.8 million tax returns across 9,000+ sites, helping deliver over $3.37 billion in refunds to households nationwide. More than 71,000 volunteers also championed the Earned Income Tax Credit, driving awareness at over 100 EITC Awareness Day events from coast to coast.
National Volunteer Week, established in 1974 by Presidential Proclamation 4288, continues to shine as a tribute to those who step forward to serve—and to those who inspire others to do the same.
