CLAIM YOUR POWER: A NEW ERA OF EITC AWARENESS BEGINS TODAY

THE PRESS CENTER | BREAKING NEWS | IRS

JANUARY 25 2026

The Internal Revenue Service, together with committed partners across the country, has launched the annual Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day—a nationwide initiative designed to empower millions of hardworking, low‑ to moderate‑income Americans to claim the financial support they have earned.

This campaign exists for a clear purpose: to ensure every eligible worker receives the full credit they deserve. The EITC is more than a tax benefit; it is a powerful resource that strengthens families, rewards effort, and supports financial stability. Your work matters, and you deserve every dollar available to you.

Frank J. Bisignano, Chief Executive Officer of the IRS, emphasized this commitment by underscoring the EITC’s essential role in uplifting working families. Every qualifying taxpayer is encouraged to claim the full amount allowed under the law. This is a reminder that you are entitled to this support, and you have earned it through your dedication.

A 20-Year Movement Rooted in Community Strength

For two decades, the IRS has partnered with community organizations, elected leaders, schools, employers, and local governments to spread awareness about the EITC. This year, leaders and partners nationwide are hosting events to highlight the credit’s impact and ensure no eligible taxpayer is overlooked.

The Impact Is Significant and Measurable

  • 23.5 million workers and families received the EITC last year.
  • A total of $68.5 billion was returned to households across the country.
  • The average credit for tax year 2024 was $2,916.

Despite its value, about one in five eligible taxpayers never claim the credit. This means millions miss out on money that could help pay bills, reduce debt, build savings, or create financial breathing room. This campaign aims to close that gap.

Clear Steps to Claim Your Credit

To receive the EITC, you must file a tax return and claim the credit, even if you are not otherwise required to file. Workers are encouraged to use the EITC Assistant to confirm eligibility and review the child‑related tax benefits comparison for straightforward rules.

For the fastest refund, file electronically and choose direct deposit. Accurate electronic filing significantly reduces delays.

When to Expect Your Refund

If you claim the EITC or the Additional Child Tax Credit and file early:

  • Most refunds should arrive in your bank account or on your debit card by March 2, 2026, provided you choose direct deposit and no issues arise with your return.
  • Some financial institutions may release funds earlier.
  • The Where’s My Refund? tool will begin showing projected deposit dates for most early filers by February 21, 2026.

Your Work Matters. Your Benefits Matter.

This campaign is a call to action. It is a reminder that you are not alone, that resources exist to support you, and that claiming the EITC is an act of empowerment. You have earned this credit through your hard work, and now is the time to claim it fully and confidently.
